Luxembourg (Walloon: Lussimbork), unofficially known as Belgian Luxembourg (Walloon: Lussimbork Bedje, French: Luxembourg Belgique) is a state of Belgium: the southernmost state of the country, it borders Germany to its east, France to its south and west, Namur to its northwest, and Liège to its north. The state was expanded with territories of the former Grand Duchy of Luxembourg during the Great War, which was partitioned between France, Belgium and Germany; on the other hand, some of its territories were given to the newborn German state of Luxemburg.
A hilly and densely wooded region, nested among the Ardennes, Luxembourg is sparsely populated except for some urban areas: it is also the least populated state of Belgium, despite being one of the largest. As a rural state, its industry is modest, and limited to some coal mines: agriculture and timber production are the main sectors of the economy. It was the theatre of fierce battle during the War, the signs of which can still be seen in some areas.
