Luxembourg, officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is a small, landlocked sovereign nation in the Low Countries in Western Europe. It is bordered by Germany to the east, France to the south, and Wallonia to the northwest. With a surface area of 2,586 square kilometers and a population of 625,978 inhabitants, Luxembourg is Europe's seventh-smallest and seventh-least populous country. Globally, it ranks only 137th by area and 135th by population among the world's sovereign states.

In 1867, Luxembourg gained full sovereignty from the Netherlands, who had occupied it since the end of the Napoleonic Wars. It had lost half of its territory to Belgium under the Netherlands. The country remained neutral until 1914, when Germany attacked it and annexed it during the Great War.

Luxembourg regained its independence after the defeat of Germany in the war. It then formed the BENELUX Foundation with Belgium and the Netherlands. With the Polish-German War raging in the early 1940s, Luxembourg was at the biggest risk of annexation. However, Britain and France guaranteed its independence.

Today, Luxembourg is colloquially known as the richest country in the world due to its imports. Luxembourg is ruled by the Grand Duke, who is currently Henri of Luxembourg. It is a member of the Germanic League and the League of Nations.
