When the bombs hit Maine was lucky enough to be spared any nuclear detonations and even more shockingly wasn't effected by the EMP Blast. Thus the National Guard was quickly mobilized to maintain order in Maine. Now 30 years later Maine has officially gained its independence from the United States and is a regional super power compared to its neighbors.

Growth Of Maine 1962-1970

By April 6th contact had been made with survivors in New Brunswick, Canada and Portsmouth, New Hampshire which were invited to migrate south to Maine as the state was safe along with having the food and other resources to support more people by April 19th 2000 people would migrate to Maine bring up the population to 100,000 after the major loss of life because of the nuclear winter in late 1983 and early 1984 which brought the state's population down to 89,000. Thus by July 4th over 8000 from the surrounding areas arrived which were incorporated into the local population raising the population to 108,000. With the New Hampshire National Guard escorting refuges from New Hampshire to Maine where they were incorporated into the Maine National Guard.

A Republic's Creation (1965-1970)

With Maine having a self-sufficient economy from the rest of the United States and the Federal Government being gone Maine declared independence due to its sufficiently independent economy and and an abundance of Natural Resources Maine quickly flourished trading with small bands of survivors after Maine gained its independence. Along with the fact that Maine's military had most likely the last working tanks and artillery in the entire area due to it being away from the EMP blast. The economy became highly self-contained with mining and ship building taking a back seat while the production of goods like fish, timber, furs, wool, leather, whale products, ships and livestock skyrocketed because of its economic situation where it's was not goods need by the modern world that need to be produced but rather those that would have been need in the colonial era.

But, Massive numbers of refugees are turned away or sent to refuge camps as the Republic of Maine would have been destroyed due to a lack of resources to feed the refugees. Anyone with skills needed by the Republic of Maine were accepted into the safe haven because of a need for their skill set. However, anyone who was thought to be a burden on Maine was rejected in order to conserve supplies needed for essential personnel.

Thus many would die in the next two years by the hand of raiders or the cold nuclear winter that would follow shortly afterwards. Along this crisis showed both the people and government of Maine that the leadership was very fractured with a civil war almost starting because of the disagreement between different factions in the civilian government. Thus it was deiced by popular vote that some house cleaning would be done within both the civilian government and the military in hopes of creating a more cohesive government and also during this time delegates from all 16 counties in Maine met in Bangor to write up a possible constitution for the new Maine Republic.

After Maine's shift in 1964 to more agricultural production it expanded its production in the agriculture sector to produce poultry, eggs, dairy products, cattle, wild blueberries, apples, maple syrup and maple sugar. Also Aroostook County is known for its potato crops. Commercial fishing, the mainstay of the state's economy, maintains a massive economic presence still post-war particularly with lobstering and ground fishing. Also Western Maine aquifers and springs are a major source of bottled water.

Hannaford used these agricultural resources to expand its chain with Hannaford constructing a 200,000-square-foot (19,000 m2) distribution center in South Portland, Maine in 1960 to better service more retail stores. With the purchase of 31 Sampson's grocery stores in 1966 as well as the 1967 purchase of Progressive Distributors, Hannaford expanded its retail presence. By 1971, the company's earnings topped $1 million. Then in 1972 Hannaford founded 21 subsidiary companies to supply it with bottled water, dairy products, potatoes, and other foodstuffs to reduce its purchases of said food stuffs from outside brands/companies thus increasing its GDP to 5 million.

Hannaford continued to rapidly expand throughout the 1970s and 1980s by partnering with the now massive Idex Labs Pharmaceutical Company and opening a chain of Wellby Drug Stores, many of which were incorporated into Shop 'N' Save retail stores. By 1987 the company had spread into New Hampshire and Vermont. That same, year sales hit one billion dollars. Now in current times it's the largest supermarket chain in New England and has an annual revenue of close to 30 billion dollars.

The Pharmaceutical Industry in Maine is very large. However, unlike many other places, it is dominated by one company Idex Labs. Idex Labs is a Maine-founded medical devices, pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods manufacturer founded in 1966 to satisfy a growing need for medical supplies in both the military and civilian consumer base.

Idex Labs is headquartered in Augusta, Maine directly adjacent to the Capital Building, the consumer division being located in Portland, Maine. The corporation includes two subsidiary companies with operations in Niagara and Kent-Lambton. However, its products are sold in five countries in North America. Idex Labs is the only major producer of medical supplies on the North American continent and because of this, shipments of Idex Labs medical supplies are regularly fought over by Owen and Niagara. Idex Labs had continental sales of six billion dollars for the calendar year of 1990.

Idex Labs brands include numerous household names of medications and first aid supplies. Among its well-known consumer products are the Band-Quick Brand line of bandages, Auxilium pain-relief medication, and the Omnes broad spectrum medication which is an upgraded vision of Penicillin created in 1989 after the Worldwide need for a single medication that could cure a broader spectrum of virus and pathogens due to a major lack of sanitary and hygiene precautions to prevent infection post-war.
