Malawi, officially the Republic of Malawi and formerly known as Nyasaland, is a sovereign country in Southeastern Africa. Malawi is bordered by Tanganyika to the north, Zambia to the west, Mozambique to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the east. It is also separated from the Comoros, Mayotte and Madagascar by the Mozambique Channel to the east. Lilongwe is the capital and largest city of Malawi. Blantyre is the second largest, Mzuzu is the third largest, and Zomba, the former capital, is the fourth largest. Before Lilongwe was chosen as the new capital, this was the original capital of Malawi.
Malawi is ruled under one-party dictatorship dominated by the Malawi Congress Party which has been established under the harsh and repressive leadership of anti-communist Hastings Banda from 1964 to 1994. Malawi is also among the least developed nations in the world. The population, which is primarily rural and is expanding quickly, is strongly dependent on agriculture. Malawi has a high newborn mortality rate and a short life expectancy. Due to the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, there is a decrease in the labor force and a rise in government spending.
