Malta is an island nation located in the Mediterranean Sea. It was a former British colony before declaring it's independence.

World War III[]
The Mediterranean Sea was the site of a major naval engagement between Allied/NATO forces and the Soviet Navy. During the first battle, the allies suffered a heavy setback as the Soviet Navy decimated the U.S. 6th fleet and heavily damaged the rest. Other ships that were still afloat retreated to the British territory of Gibraltar. Since the Soviets dominated the Mediterranean, the USSR invaded Malta, along with the southern French coast, the French island of Corsica, the Italian island of Sardinia, and the Baleric Islands.
Malta was occupied by the Soviet Armed Forces from August 1989 to the end of the war of 1991.
