The Republic of Mangystau is a small survivor state located on the coast of the Caspian Sea, primarily around the city of Fort-Shevchenko and nearby coastal villages. The nation was created by the remains of the Soviet Caspian Flotilla following Doomsday and the collapse of Soviet control in the area.

History[]

Prior to Doomsday, the region that would later become the Mangystau Republic was under the control of Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic and was one of the main ports for the Soviet Navy's Caspian Flotilla.

Doomsday[]

When Doomsday hit Soviet control of the region collapsed almost immediately, as Aktau (the Administrative center of the region) was wiped out following a nuclear strike of around 40 KT. With most of region descending into chaos Hamid Habib Qasımbəyov (the then Vice-Admiral of the Caspian Flotilla) recalled all surviving military ships to regroup at Fort Shevchenko to establish a safe haven for any survivors.

After Doomsday[]

In the following years efforts were mainly made to establish a reliable food and energy sources, with many of the smaller patrol boats and minesweepers being converted in fishing boats. However, despite initial success, expansion was slow and only really applied to the coast, as it was clear the fledgling state could not afford any major inland expeditions at the time due to manpower and supplier shortages. Despite this through attempts were still made to contact any remains of the USSR (through little success) and the state still continued on claiming it was part of the USSR.

The after 1987 most of the problems facing were solved, the state had reclaimed control of minor nearby oilfields which allowed for increased growth (both in terms of size and populations) and though food was still rationed the situation was no way near as severe as it was a few years prior. This stability soon attracted large numbers of refugees from the surrounding area, with many small villages joining the country in return for protection and supplies. This growth and prosperity lead many to believe that the remnants could survive as an independent nation, rather than a relic of the USSR. So in 1989 government officials declared the "Independence" of the Mangystau Republic.

The Republic then began to establish formal contact with neighboring survivor states (along the existence of them was know and even occasional trade occurred there had been no attempt to establish normal relations) such as Kalmykia in 1993 and Dagestan in 1996. With these connection trade began to occur in through the region as surplus oil was shipped out in return for food and materials not accessible in the region.

The Republic soon became the sole major power on the east Caspian coast after the town of Beyneu was Secured in 2001. This dominance, however, would quickly end with the contact of Aralia in 2002, though to most of the population this was viewed as positive discovery as to most it meant a new trade partner and economic growth rather than a rival and possible future conflicts. Which lead to great shock and fear when Aralia was conquered by the Socialist Siberia in 2010, and as a result the years following have seen a large increase in the Republic's military capabilities as well as size in fear of an attack not to similar to that of the Aralia war.

Military[]

The military of Mangystau Republic is surprisingly large for a nation of its size, with most of military strength retailed from the former Caspian Flotilla. The military is divided into two branches:

The Mangystau Navy[]

The Mangystau Navy is almost completely made up of former Soviet ships, through recent efforts have been made to replace the aging ships. It is the single largest part of the military. The fleets are as followed

  • Central Fleet -The main bulk of the Navy, Its main purpose is to establish new footholds along the coast whilst protecting the nation from any Naval assaults.
  • Trade Fleet - A group of the navy which main purpose is to protect trade routes and eliminate any pirates in Caspian sea.

The Mangystau Navy is also in control of a small air force, located in Bautino. In its control are seven Sukhoi Su-24, the majority of which have been purchased from Iran.

The Mangystau Army[]

The Mangystau Army has 1200 Active troops, with further reserves of 1800. The majority of which have been recruited since 2010 following the Soviet invasion of Aralia. The main force has some MA8 Pattons and armoured vehicles purchased from Iran, but for the most part troops fight on foot, with the exception of scouting forces and expeditions which make use of horses for mobility and to carry supplies.

Economy[]

The economy of the Mangystau Republic is mostly survival based, with most of its industries based around fishing, though in recent years there have been large growths in the nation's Oil and textile industries as a result of renewed trade with other survivor states. This has lead to Fort Shevchenko becoming a minor economic hub in the region with several of its ports undergoing expansion to allow for increasing large cargo ships to dock.

The Mangystau republic is a multiparty Presidential system, with President ruling for life (usually until death in the case of Hamid Habib Qasımbəyov, who the chose Yuriy Startsev as his successor) and most presidential elections being heavily one-sided due to laws and political restrictions ,such as, preventing opposing political parties from advertising during the election period, this almost always leads to NPD winning and Yuriy Startsev  staying in power.

Despite this the main administrative houses of the government are elected democratically. They are the; national assembly, which takes care of the day to day running of the Republic and resolves minor issues, and the Senate which deals with larger and more pressing issue, such as defence and international relations (However both houses are dominated by the NDP, preventing any real political opposition to Yuriy Startsec).

The current government is a coalition between the National Democratic Party and the Caspian Party after the 2013 Elections. The Political parties are as follows.

Party Nation Assembly Members Senate Members Notes
National Democratic Party 19 10 A center-right party. Its main policies are increased expansion, Conservatism and increased military spending to protect against the USSR.
Progression Party 6 1 A central liberal party. Its main policies involve Progressive liberalism with some socialist policies (as a result of mergers with smaller socialist parties in the past)
Caspian Party

5

1 A right party often associated with nationalism and regionalism.
Workers Party 2 0 A far-left party formed from the remains of the former soviet government. It's unlike the other main political parties because it supports the idea of joining the USSR, citing the nation's small size and population.

Demographics[]

The ethnic make-up of the Republic is as follows: 72% Russian, 24% Kazakh, 1.5% Turkmen and 2.5% Other.

Christianity is the dominant religion in Maangystau, through there is a large Muslim minority(almost exclusively made up of Sunni) with smaller Jewish and atheist minorities. The religious make-up is as follows: 67%  Christian, 25% Muslim, 4% Jewish, 3% Atheist and 1% Slavic Neopagan.

International relations[]

The Republic of Mangystau has in recent years established formal relation with other Caspian Sea survivor states, with its own embassies in Kalmykia, Dagestan and Azerbaijan. However, the Republic does not have a seat in the League of Nations due to Socialist Siberia claiming the region. The republic also has a trade agreement with Iran to supply the republic with modern weapons and equipment in exchange for oil and other natural resources.
