Marilyn Monroe (/ˈmærəlɪn mənˈroʊ/; born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 – November 29, 2014) was an American actress, model, comedian, and singer. Famous for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s, as well as an emblem of the era's sexual revolution. However, by the mid 60s, due to her struggles with depression and medications, Marilyn Monroe refrained from her image as a sex icon, and starred in more comedic and successful films, even more dramatic films (Mulan for example). She is best known for her role as Rose Nylund on the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls (1985–1992), alongside Betty White, who played Blanche. She is also best known for her role as Granny Norma in the 2012 animated adaptation of The Lorax.
