Born and raised in the Royal Palace, in Warsaw, he spent his childhood studying in the best schools of the capital.
His father died in 1975, at the age of 59, of a sudden cardiac arrest. His loss was a blow to the country. Mark had to carry the burden of the succession.
He made his military service in the Royal Guards in 1978, which he left as a Lieutenant.
He attended the Warsaw University, where he was to obtain a master's degree in law, but has to quit his studies at the death of his grandfather, aged 89.
On 29 November 1984, he engaged to Princess Marie of France, born in Paris on January 3, 1959. The royal wedding was held on 2 May 1986 at the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow, with a reception at the nearby Wawel Castle. The bride wore a gown by Christian Lacroix and a jacket embroidered by Maison Lesage. Several monarchs and heads of state gathered at the ceremony, transmitted live via satellite networks.
Mark and his wife Marie have three children:
- Prince John Mark Stefan, Crown Prince, born on June 25, 1988 in Warsaw
- Princess Maria Elisabeth Rose, born on December 15, 1991 in Krakow.
- Prince Karl Boniface, born on Mars 16, 1993 in Warsaw
