Marquisbourg, officially the Republic of Marquisbourg (French: République de Marquisbourg) is a nation located in Columbia. It is bordered by Maya to the north, and Mexica to the south and west, while sharing maritime borders with Tiefenadler. To the east, it is bordered by the Gulf of Ophir, part of the Sea of the King.
The Maya civilization spread into the area of Marquisbourg between 1500 BC and 300 AD and flourished until about 1200. European settlement began in 1480 with the establishment of the Territory of Marquisbourg by the Kingdom of Burgundy, largely following the collapse of the Maya in the region. It was able to sustain itself from frequent attacks and trade disputes with Mexica, Castile, the Maya, and Hanseatic traders. Following Burgundy's collapse, the island became a French territory and remained as such until 1921, when it gained independence from the French Empire following its collapse. The country served as a de jure protectorate of the Grand Confederation from 1922 to 1933, when it became sovereign again due to the establishment of a fascist regime in the Confederacy. It shares close cultural ties to Champlain, another nation with a French colonial history.
Due to low population and high travel, Marquisbourg's tourist industry comprises over 30% of its GDP. It frequently hosts international diplomatic meetings and is one of three nations to have an official IMF building, located in the capital and largest city of Sigismunden. Marquisbourg is a member of the Global Treaty Organization and the League to Enforce Peace, but is generally considered a neutral country.
