The State of Maryland was a founding member of the United States. It is identical to *here*'s Maryland in area, except for also including *here*'s District of Columbia. Maryland tends to be dominated by Virginia, often to the extent of being thought of as an extension of Virginia. Virginia proposed annexing Maryland in the late 19th century, but Maryland retained her independence.

The title of the chief executive was changed to Consul after the dissolution of the United States.
