A Colonial Power[]

In 1817, increasing amounts of African slaves were being freed in the northern nations of America when slavery was abolished. Afraid at what these newly freed blacks would do, several reputable leaders of Maryland founded the Maryland Colonization Society. It was dedicated to finding a solution to the "problem" of the free black population. There seemed to be only one solution. Resettling the free blacks in Africa.The government of Msaryland gave the MCS a government grant of £100,000. In January of 1820 the first ship, the Goldsborough, sailed from Baltimore. When they arrived in Africa they created the colony of New Maryland. Over the next few years the new colony is solidified, and even expands somewhat.
