Africa[]

The film industry in Africa, particularly in some developing nations, is in a mixed situation. The largest film producers in the continent are Egypt for the Arab-speaking world and Nigeria though its famous Nollywood industry. Some industries are based on Nollywood, including Ghallywood and Zuluwood, in Ghana and South Africa, respectively.

Poorer film industries like Wakaliwood and Kumawood have gained cult status worldwide.

Africa[]

The largest television broadcasters in the continent are the Egyptian Radio and Television Union, Ghana Television, the Nigerian Television Authority and the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

Television arrived in the mid-50s through a private company in Morocco, though broadcasts later stopped after a short while on air. The oldest television services in Africa were founded, chronologically, in Algeria under a French colony (1956); Nigeria (1958); Ghana (1959); Egypt (1960) and Rhodesia (1961). In the 60s there was a growth to the television industry, yet most countries depended on foreign content.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation's television service signed on in 1974. It became the last country in the so-called "industrialzed world" to open such a service.
