Massachusetts is a state of New England, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, New Hampshire and Vermont to the north, the New Netherlands to the west, and Connecticut and Rhode Island to the south. Massachusetts was the site of the second British colony in all of the New World, and rapidly rose to become New England's main industrial, economic and cultural centre.
Massachusetts is a quite varied territory, with low hills to the west slowly degrading into a coastal plain toward the ocean: in this region is located Boston, the national capital and the capital of Massachusetts. The state's western area is predominantly rural, while the eastern area is home to one of New England's main industrial hubs: the most important industrial sectors are naval industry and manufacturing.
