Maximilian III (Spanish: Maximiliano Fernando Javier José María de Ignacio-Hohenberg; 23 January 1950 – 31 January 2023) was the Emperor of the Second Mexican Empire from 23 January 1950 until his death in 2023. He was the second son of Maximilian II, he succeeded his brother Ferdinand II after his abdication, and married Eleonore of Auersperg-Breunner, with whom he had three children. His reign lasted over 70 years, making it the third longest verified reign of any head of state in history.
Maximilian was born in Mexico City, during the reign of his grandfather, Ferdinand I. He was the second son of Maximilian II and second in the line of succession, behind his brother and later emperor Ferdinand II. As a young man, Maximilian wanted to join the Mexican Royal Navy but never got the chance to be part of it. Following the First World War, Mexico entered a political turmoil during the following decades, that caused the assassination of his father and the failed Coup d'etat that lead to the abdication of his brother. He married Eleonore of Auersperg-Breunner, Duchess of Hohenberg, with whom they had 3 children: Maximiliano, Julieta and Nicolás (Maximilian IV), the current emperor of Mexico.
After the abdication of his brother on 23 January 1950, he became the Emperor at the age of 21. Most of his reign is considered to be part of the coloquially called "Golden Age of Mexico" his reign achieved things like increasing trade with the United States, a significant economic growth, a huge increase in the population of major cities like Los Ángeles, the creation of NAFTA and the League of Four Emperors, and most importantly, the end of the absolute monarchy in Mexico, making the country a constitutional monarchy.
On January 31, 2023 at 22:09 Maximilian passed away, and his son Maximilian IV succeeded him as emperor.
