The Mediterranean Defense League is a common defensive organization composed of states in the Eastern Mediterranean, Balkans, and Middle East who seek to ensure their collective security and protect their interests as a single organization.
Current Situation[]
As a recently founded organization, the Mediterranean Defense League has committed itself to reorganize itself into an effective military organization. The integration of the militaries of the various member-states has begun with earnest to enable the MDL to provide an effective defense of its members. Joint MDL military bases are being planned to be set up in all member-states. In addition, contingency plans for the defense of its members are being drawn up and war games and other joint military exercises are being scheduled for late 2011 to test the MDL's integration efforts.
History[]
Founding[]
The Mediterranean Defense League was founded upon the long standing military cooperation between the Sultanate of Turkey and Macedonia. Both sought to extend their alliance to other nations and improve their collective security. As a result on January 1, 2011, Turkey, Macedonia, and their allies came together to form the Mediterranean Defense League. The overall organizational headquarters were established in Gaziantep, Turkey.
Consolidation[]
As the MDL become formally established, its member-states sought to fulfill the goals of the organization as quickly as possible. Integration of the separate militaries began immediately, which was quickly followed by the integration of missile and radar defense systems. Initially, the MDL sought to address the more basic security concerns of its members, such as border security, the openness of sealanes, and the international drug and arms trade.

Secretariat[]
The Secretariat of the MDL is the administrative organ of the organization. It handles all administrative matters of the MDL and composes the integrated military bureaucracy of the member-states. The Secretariat is headed by the Secretary-General, who is nominated by a member of the Security Council and then must receive a second. Then they are put to vote before the entire Security Council and the candidate with the highest number of votes becomes the new Secretary-General. A deputy Secretary-General is appointed through the same process. The Secretary-General also acts the political and diplomatic representative of MDL internationally.
Security Council[]
The Security Council is the highest decision-making body in the MDL. It is composed of a permanent representative from each member-state who has the same status as an ambassador. They vote on conducting all military operations, training exercises, and other high-level decisions, such as cooperation treaties with other countries and organizations. There is a biannual conference during which the leaders of all member-states conduct the Security Council. During these conferences, major changes and decisions about the future of the organization are made.
General Staff[]
The General Staff is the military leadership of the MDL. It is composed of various generals, admirals, and other military representatives from all the member-states. The General Staff is headed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who represented the integrated leadership of each military branch from all member-states. The Joint Chiefs are headed by the chairman, who is selected from one of the Joint Chiefs.
Military Commands[]
The overall military command structure of the MDL is divided into three regional commands. The purpose of this division is the focus and increase the efficiency of regional military operations. Each military command has a separate leadership command that is integrated through the central general staff, secretariat, and various agencies based in Gaziantep.
The Balkans Command is the military command in charge of all military operations in the Balkan Peninsula and Adriatic Sea. It is primarily composed of Bosnian and Macedonian military forces. Its headquarters are located in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
The Anatolian Command is the military command in charge of all military operations in the Aegean Sea, Black Sea, and Anatolia. It is primarily composed of Turkish, Patnosi and Erzuruman forces. Its headquarters are located in Samsun, Turkey.
The Levant Command is the military command in charge of all military operations in the eastern Mediterranean and the Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Israel-Palestine, Suez). It is primarily composed of Turkish and Lebanese forces. Its headquarters are in Zahle, Lebanon.
Agencies[]
Under the jurisdiction of the Secretariat are a variety of agencies, organizations, and committees that run and administrate the MDL. Each agency has a specific assignment that may range from basic bureaucracy to military assistance. These agencies are critical to the running of the MDL. All agency headquarters are based in and around the Turkish city of Gaziantep. However, all agencies are required to maintain full regional offices in each member-state.

Training Command[]
The MDL Training Command is a jointly operated training program established by the member-states. Its purpose to properly train all militaries in the MDL in order to bring them up to the same standards. Instructors are trained at the MDL-approved military academies in the member-states in order to unify training regiments across the League.
General Regulations[]
In order to join the MDL, a nation must meet certain requirements and pass through an admission process. First, a nation must submit an application for membership or respond to an invitation from one of the member-states. Second, they must meet all requirements of the application, which include: having at least 4% of GDP devoted to military spending and being geographically located in the Greater Mediterranean Basin. If those requirements are met, the application will be forwarded to the Security Council who will decide on their acceptance. A country can apply as an observer or a full member. To be accepted as either candidate type, the Security Council must unanimously approve the application. Once the application is approved, the new member-state's military will be integrated into the overall MDL command structure, the appropriate agencies offices will be established in the new country, and joint MDL military bases (army, navy and air force) will be established in the country.

Mediterranean Defense Conglomerate[]
The Mediterranean Defense Conglomerate is an economic organization built within the MDL that works to use the combined abilities of military companies in the MDL member states. It combines the Zastava Arms Corporation and the Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation, which work together to build factories and develop new weapons. The organization is currently working to build a new model for a tank and a MRL system to be used by its member states as common defense weapons.
International Relations[]
As a fairly new international organization, the MDL has yet to fully interact with other major nations and organizations around the world. However, it is hoped that cooperation and dialogue with other countries and organizations will begin soon. Nonetheless, the many nations of the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand and the South American Confederation have expressed a variety of reactions to the creation of the MDL.

Owing to the long-term rivalry between Turkey and Greece, as well as the Second Sicily War still fresh in people's minds, many were alarmed by the formation of the MDL so soon after the conflict. However, many Atlantic strategists have since calmed down to the organization's continued presence on the scene, arguing that a stable enemy is better than an unstable one.
CSTO[]
With CSTO member-state Siberia claiming land of several nearby Black Sea Accords signatories, along with the MDU's Sultanate of Turkey's irredentist claim to land lost to the nominally-Greek controlled League of Nations Mandate in the Bosporus, the two blocs have had no reason for dischord as of yet, and if anything have mutual goals. Nevertheless, contact between the two organizations remains minimal.
