The Free City of Melilla (Spanish: Ciudad Libre de Melilla), commonly known as Melilla, is a city-state in Northern Africa enclosed by Morocco and the Mediterranean Sea. It has an area of 12.3 km² (4.7 sq mi), and a population of 86,384.

Before independence, Melilla was part of the Spanish Morocco, but received an special status along with Ceuta due to their Spanish-majority populations. After the Occupation of Spain, Melilla was one of the four territories occupied by the United States (along with the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and Galicia). A different referendum was realized, with the population choosing between remaining as a Columbian special territory, the transfer of sovereignty to Morocco, or remaining an independent city, eventually choosing the third option.

Considered a city-state, Melilla is not only recognized by Morocco, who's a subject of irredentist claim, and Oman, considered the biggest Morrocan ally. Melilla is considered a member of the Society of Nations, the Iberian Federation, Organization of Microstates, and has a special status between European nations, including the observer state status in the European Union.
