Mexico, officially the Mexican Empire, is a sovereign state in the southern part of North America. It borders the USA to the north, the Pacific ocean to the west, Colombia to the south and the Mexican Gulf to the east. It is a federation, comprised of 41 federal states and Mexico City, its capital and largest city.
Pre-Columbian Mexico traces its origins to 8,000 BC and is identified as one of the six cradles of civilization; it was home to many advanced Mesoamerican civilizations, most notably the Maya and the Aztecs. In 1521, the Spanish Empire conquered and colonized the region from its base in Mexico City, establishing the colony of New Spain. The Catholic Church played an important role in spreading Christianity and the Spanish language, while also preserving some indigenous elements. Native populations were subjugated and heavily exploited to mine rich deposits of precious metals, which contributed to Spain's status as a major world power for the next three centuries, and to a massive influx of wealth and a price revolution in Western Europe. Over time, a distinct Mexican identity formed, based on a fusion of European and indigenous customs; this contributed to the successful Mexican War of Independence against Spain in 1821.
Following collapse in the relations between Spain and its former colony, the Mexican provisional government ultimately offered the new Mexican crown to Archduke Karl of Austria, Duke of Teschen, who would become the first Mexican Emperor as Carlos I. Under his leadership, Mexico would be able to reestablish trade relations with Europe's major powers, industrialize the country, boost the economy and reform the military, thus setting the foundations of the state's rise to prosperity.
Mexico successfully kept its rebellious Mesoamerican provinces during the Central American Conflict, but most importantly it defeated the other rising power in North America- the United States. The Mexican-American War is considered crucial in the fledgling state's survival as USA migrants to Texas and California had almost caused the loss of the underpopulated Mexican provinces. This resulted in government sponsored migrations to these territories by people from the southern regions of the country and Mexico also welcomed migrants from as far as China and the war-torn Colombian republic. Panama was added in 1889, following the Mexican-Colombian War, which saw the entire region acquisitioned as part of Emperor Alberto I's plan to build a canal between the Caribbean sea and the Pacific ocean through Panama's territory. Mexico stayed neutral throughout both World Wars. Its relations with the USA began warming up when the US contributed in putting down the Texan Commune, a communist would be revolution in its northern territory.
Mexico is a federal state under a constitutional monarchy, where the monarch still has great constitutional privileges, although they exercise most of their influence behind the scenes in modern times. The dynasty, which has reigned over the country since foundation, is the House of Habsburg-Lorraine-Mexico (Spanish: Casa de Habsburgo-Lorena-Mexico) or the House of Habsburg-Mexico (Spanish: Casa de Habsburgo-Mexico). Its 7th and current head is Fernando II, who bears the title of Emperor of Mexico, one of only three monarchs in the world with it, the others being the Emperors of Brazil and Japan. The head of government is Prime Minister Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Mexico is a developed country with a highly developed economy. It is considered a regional power, a great power and a potential superpower.
