Mexico (Spanish: México, Nāhuatl: Mexihco), officially known as the Mexican Empire (Spanish: Imperio Mexicano, Nāhuatl: Mēxihcatl Emperador Ītlahtohcāyo) is a sovereign country in Central America: it borders the Gulf of Mexico to its east, the Confederate States of America to its northeast, Deseret to its north, California to its northwest, the Pacific Ocean to its west, and Centroamerica and Yucatán to its south. It is the largest state of the region both by area and by population.
The land of Mexico is the ancestral homeland of one of the most famous pre-Columbian civilizations of the America, the Aztecs (whose language, Nāhuatl, is still spoken in several areas of central Mexico). It was later settled by Spain and achieved independence in the early 19th century. After a short turbulent period in which several governments overthrew their predecessors, a military intervention led by France installed Maximilian I of Habsburg-Lorraine on the throne, thus establishing the Second Mexican Empire, which still exists today. Throughout the decades, the empire lost some of its northern territories (mostly to Deseret and California, to which the Mexicans sold Baja California) as well as Yucatán, which became an independent republic.
Mexico is a large and diverse country, occupied by tall mountains and large massifs, mesas and deserts in the arid north, and hills and jungles in the tropical south. All the population speaks Spanish, but many native groups still use their own language. Its economy is large and prosperous, dominated by manufacturing and oil extraction. The empire is subdivided into 18 administrative provinces:
- Aztlán
- Central Mexico
- Coahuila
- Guanajuato
- Michoacán
- New Biscay
- New Galicia
- New Leon
- New Mexico
- New Santander
- Oaxaca
- Puebla
- Querétaro
- Rio Grande
