Settled by the French in the 1530s, the colonists quickly came into contact with (and conflict with) the native Aztec people. Cooperation was unfathomable to the Europeans, given the Aztec religions bloodthirsty practice of human sacrifice, and the decision was made to wipe out the natives, rather than work with them as was done in Louisiana and Jamaïque
