Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (Russian: Михаил Сергеевич Горбачёв; born 2 March 1931) is a Russian politician who served as the President of Russia from 2012 to 2016. Gorbachev previously held this position from 1980 to 1992. Gorbachev is a member of the Popular Socialist Party.
Gorbachev was born on 2 March 1931 to a Russian-Ukrainian poor peasant family in Saratov. Gorbachev began his political career in the 1950s. For the 1980 Russian presidential election, the Popular Socialist Party nominated Gorbachev for president, in which Gorbachev won, becoming the president of Russia. Later, Gorbachev won the presidential elections in 1984 and 1988, remaining in office until 1992, when Yevgeny Primakov, a candidate for the Progressive Party, won the presidential election held in the same year. During Gorbachev's first presidency, Russia changed from a presidential system to a semi-presidential system in 1988, and during the last phase of the Cold War, Russia slowly began to improve relations with some former enemy countries.
For the 2012 Russian presidential election, the Popular Socialist Party again nominated Gorbachev for president, in which Gorbachev won and became the president of Russia again. Compared to his first presidency, which lasted 12 years, Gorbachev's second presidency lasted only 4 years after Boris Nemtsov, a candidate for the Progressive Party, won the 2016 election.
