The Federative Republic of Moldova, colloquially known as Moldova (Cyrillic: Молдова), is a sovereign state located in Southeast Europe. The nation is bordered by Ukraine in the east and Romania in the west. Chișinău is both the capital and largest city.

Moldova gained its independence in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. As a consequence of this, fighting intensified between Chișinău and the break-away region of Transnistria. A ceasefire was established in the summer of 1992, with Transnistria gaining de facto independence and coming under nominal Russian and Ukrainian influence. For the next decade the conflict would remain frozen. In November 2003, a peace plan is agreed upon by Chișinău and Tiraspol (as well as getting international support from Alaska and the Russian Federation).

Under the plan, Moldova would become a federation comprised of three subjects: Gagauzia, Transnistria, and with the remaining territory being directly controlled by the federal government. Moldova was also to abolish its armed forces and become a neutral state. A new federal constitution is ratified in 2004.
