The Mongol Empire (Mongolian: Их Монгол Улс), colloquially known as Mongolia (Mongolian: Монгол Улс), is a sovereign state once considered the largest contiguous empire in history. It is the last remaining colonial empire and the largest khanate in the world. The country has the world's second-largest land area and the second-largest population next to China, exceeding 1 billion. In the mainland, Mongolia borders Yevraziya to the north, Korea and the Yellow Sea to the southeast, China to the south, and Uyghuristan to the southwest. Most of its colonies (ulsuud) don't have any land borders with any other political entity, with the sole exceptions of Galdan Uls, which borders the Navajo Republic to the east and Mogavi Khanate to the southeast, Matar Uls, which borders Tutiqushiland and Natchezia to the north, Darkhan Uls, which borders the Mayan Empire and the Zapotec Kingdom to the northwest and Saejosŏn to the southeast, and Möngön Uls which borders Tawantinsuyu to the north, Wichíland and Xokleng to the east, Chonia to the south and Wallmapu to the west.
The territory of modern-day Mongolia has been ruled by various nomadic empires, including the Xiongnu (Khunnu), the Xianbei (Shanbee), the Rouran (Juujai), the First Turkic Khaganate, the Second Turkic Khaganate, the Uyghur Khaganate and others. In 1206, Genghis Khan founded the Mongol Empire, which became the largest contiguous land empire in history. In the 14th-15th centuries, the Mongols discovered Australia and Galdan Gazar and formed a vast colonial empire, conquering various regions of the Earth from Ireland to Galdan Uls and parts of Africa.
