The National Security Intelligence Agency uses code names for Cygnian monarchs, the Royal family, Cygnian Chancellors, their spouses, and other prominent persons and locations. The use of such names was originally for security purposes and dates to a time when sensitive electronic communications were not routinely encrypted; today, the names simply serve for purposes of brevity, clarity, and tradition. NSIA does not choose these names, however. The Chancellery Communications Agency assigns them. CCA was originally created as the Chancellery Signal Detachment by John Curtin.

The CCA, an agency of the Chancellery Military Office, is headquartered at Joint Base Cockburn and consists of six staff elements and seven organisational units. CCA also has supporting detachments in Northam, TS and various locations throughout Cygnia.

According to established protocol, good codewords are unambiguous words that can be easily pronounced and readily understood by those who transmit and receive voice messages by radio or telephone regardless of their native language. Traditionally, all family members' code names start with the same letter.

The codenames change over time for security purposes, but are often publicly known. For security, codenames are generally picked from a list of such 'good' words, but avoiding the use of common words which could likely be intended to mean their normal definitions.

The Royal family

In addition to the Emperor's Guard, the Royal family is also afforded protection by NSIA when they are, for example, attending public events, or in any other instances where NSIA feels that the protection provided by the Emperor's Guard alone may not be adequate. As such, codenames are also created for all major members of the Royal House.
