Nanticokeland Fylk is mostly formed of the large peninsula after which it is named and is Álengiamark's southernmost fylk. To the west lies Cheasapeake Bay which divides it from the majority of Susquehanockland and Powhatanland. To the east is Drottningr Bay dividing it from Unamiland. It has a short land border with both Susquehanockland and Unamiland. The population is 1,005,900. The capital is Yrsakavelyk.
History[]
Nanticoke fell under Álengsk rule during the breakup of the First Aniyunwiyan Empire after the death of Edoha. Several Aniyunwiyan lords reasoned they would be better off throwing their lot in with the Álengsk rather than Edoha's squabbling heirs.
Historically the most sparsely populated fylk of Álengiamark, Nanticokeland was severely depopulated during the Great Unami revolt. The Congress of Fjallasay in 1388 determined that it should remain with Álengiamark however its distance from the main body of the country amplified its isolation. What would become Northern Nanticokeland was divided between the city of Wásunkhannaborg and a portion of the Royal Domain. Southern Nanticokeland was divided between its earl and the lands of the Sjóvath Abbey. Like all Álengsk territories these paid little heed to the laws of St. Hafdiss (or indeed the powerless queens) and ran themselves like miniture kingdoms. The family of the Earls of Nanticoke produced two queens: Yrsa II and Brynja II, though neither were particularly distinguished.
In the past there were occasional disputes with Susquehanock and Powhatans over the maritime border and the 'Battle of Álfteajya' in 1712 saw fishermen from all three nations brawl off the small island.
During the 1760s refugees from the Great Baltic War, mostly from Svealandic Ingria, Livonia and Finland, emigrated to Álengiamark. Most would end up directed towards Nanticokeland to help finally settle the area, clearing forests, draining swampland and transforming the somewhat barren fylk into farmland. This changed the make-up of the area and outside of the Álengsk dominated cities the countryside effectively became Sveamål and Finnish-speaking, swamping the small isolated farms of the long-established Álengsk and even-longer standing Leifian peoples, of which only the Maraughquaick tribe still formed a coherent band. The Álengsk authorities would spend decades trying to re-establish Álengsk as the majority language, suppressing the languages of the newcomers. However the dialect of Nanticokish, basically Álengsk with Finnish vocabulary and an extra case ending was left behind and is still spoken by around 300,000 in the fylk. Attempts to have this recognised as an official national language have so far failed to pass the Althing in St. Hafdiss however, it is taught in many local schools and several Nanticokish Newspapers are in circulation.
Much of the Álengsk Film Industry is located in and around the capital thanks to the fylk's good weather and cheap land.
