The Narmerian Dynasty is a royal house of Egyptian origin, descending agnatically from the first Upper Egyptian dynasty, the Akerids, and through female lines from the Hapuid dynasty. It is regarded as the largest and oldest extant royal house in the world. The dynasty traces its foundation to Narmer, who established it in 3150 BC. His male-line descendants ruled Egypt—with interruptions—until 1327 BC, and the dynasty has claimed continuous sovereignty since 35 BC. The senior branch of the House of Narmer ruled from Narmer’s coronation in 3150 until the death of Sneferka in 2908 BC. Afterward, more than thirty cadet branches succeeded in turn, the latest being the House of Tutankhamun.
The dynasty has governed Egypt in some form for over 5,000 years, though it has been deposed several times. The first deposition occurred in 2160 BC, when Neferikara II Pepi III was overthrown by Khety of Herakleopolis. Despite this, Narmerid rulers continued as provincial governors in Waset (Thebes) until the crown was restored under Mentuhotep II. A second overthrow occurred during the Second Intermediate Period, when Sewadjkara I assassinated Pharaoh Sehotepibra II and reigned briefly before being killed by Nedjemibra. Sehotepibra’s cousin Sobekhotep reclaimed the throne, inaugurating the second Narmerid Restoration. His line held power for two decades until the young king Wegaf was deposed by the Asiatic general Khendjer. After Khendjer’s death in a native uprising, Wegaf declined to return, and his descendants remained outside the crown until Pepi, his great-grandson, was elevated as co-pharaoh under Ay to appease local nobles during the Hyksos invasions. This marked the third Narmerid Restoration.
The dynasty continued until 1327 BC, when Tutankhamun I died without a suitable successor. The distant Narmerid line in Elephantine—descendants of Thutmose IV—was bypassed due to concerns over hereditary disabilities. Instead, the throne passed first to Ay II, a maternal descendant of the Narmerids through Ahmose Nefertari, and subsequently to Horemheb I and the Ramessid dynasty. The Elephantine branch remained provincial rulers for centuries, though later pharaohs ordered their executions as potential rivals. In response, surviving members consolidated wealth and military power. In 37 BC, Lord Ahmose of Elephantine launched a rebellion against the Ptolemaic dynasty with Roman support, begining the fourth Narmerid Restoration, which continues to the present. Since then, the dynasty has reigned without interruption, although its sovereignty has been challenged during the so-called Fifth and Sixth Intermediate Periods.
Dynastic Relations[]
The Narmerids are notable for relative internal stability. With few exceptions, succession remained uncontested within the main line. Four significant episodes of internal conflict are recorded:
- Rival claimants during the Fifth Intermediate Period in opposition to Amunirdisu IV.
- Rival claimants during the Sixth Intermediate Period in opposition to Ramesses XII.
- The feud between Neferhotep V and his son Unas III, which briefly split the kingdom before reconciliation after Unas’s death.
- Repeated usurpations against Dedumose VIII.
In modern times, the Narmerian Dynasty reigns as the sovereign house of the Egyptian Empire, and also rules the constituent kingdoms of Cyprus and Yemen.
Name[]
The name of the dynasty derives from its founder, Narmer, the first king of a unified egypt, since his death the dynasty has been called by may name, generally emphasizing the founder of the ruling cadet branch, the longest being the house of Sahura (571 years), and as is the case with current dynasty, popular alternative names include the Thutmosid Dynasty and the Kamosid Dynasty, though both only apply to the dynasty since the fourth restoration,

Present Day[]
Members of the royal family not part of the core royal family (Monarch, his children and grandchildren) don't hold political power (except those who serve as nomarch), but many remain important figure, each head of a cadet branch has ceremonial role as head chancellor of a university, and many remain active in the millitary, since while not being members of the core dynasty they are still expected to serve the state somehow, princes in the millitary are not given privileges and are promoted based on competence as per decree of Psusennes IX, after a series of unqualified generals led to Egypt's most crushing defeat since nubia gained independence, to keep their status he made each serving prince an honorary patron of the regiment, but their responsabilites and actual rank would thereafter be tied to their competence, in addition to the millitary the other narmerids can be found in the bureau of infrastructure and the Pharaoh's architectural office, as well as in the priesthood and other traditional offices of the state
The house of Narmer, from Aker I to Ahmose VIII; Circle: Male; Losange: Female; Blue: Ancestor that never took the crown in own right; Purple: Monarch
