founded in 1869 and is one of the oldest professional sports leagues in the Americas. Prior to 1869, the modern NBL was comprised of many small teams that competed in other baseball leagues, and it wasn't until the late 1800s that the NBL established mainstay franchises to exclusively play in their league.

The NBL is currently divided between two leagues, the American League (AL) and the National League (NL), with each league consisting of three divisions: the East, Central, and West Divisions. The NBL is currently composed of 33 teams, with two more to be added by the beginning of the 1998 season. The league's roster competes in a 162 game season starting on the first Sunday in April and ending on the first Sunday of October. Each team competes to earn a spot in the playoffs for their chance to play in the NBL's World Series.
