Neferkahor I, also known simply as Neferka, was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who initially served as regent for his father, Pepi II, during the late Old Kingdom period. His reign marked a significant period of transition as Egypt faced increasing political and social challenges.
Born into the royal family during a time of turbulence, Neferkahor I's birth was considered a good omen for Egypt. As the firstborn son of Pharaoh Pepi II, Neferkahor I was destined for leadership. When his father, one of Egypt's longest-reigning monarchs, grew senile, Neferkahor I was thrust into the role of regent on 13 August 2206 BC. Taking on the immense responsibility of governing Egypt during his father's decline, he quickly became the kingdom's stabilizing force.
On 8 June 2203 BC, Neferkahor I was officially elevated to the position of Pharaoh, marking the formal beginning of his reign. Despite the immense challenges of ruling during a period of political and social instability, he worked diligently to maintain order and continuity in the kingdom. His reign as pharaoh, though brief, lasted until 20 November 2199 BC, when he passed away due to old age.
Following his death, the regency passed to his younger brother, Nemtyemsaf, who would later ascend to the throne as Pharaoh Nemtyemsaf II, as Neferkahor didn't have any children.
