The Kingdom of the Netherlands (Dutch: Koninkrijk der Nederlanden), also known simply as the Netherlands is a sovereign state and constitutional monarchy located in northern Europe, and centered in the Lowlands. The Netherlands also controls several colonies, protectorates, and territorial possessions across the world, including holdings in Hesperia, Asia, and India.
Formed in 1450 upon the signing of the Treaty of Brussels between Karl I, first king of the Netherlands, and Albert II of Germany, Holy Roman Emperor, the Netherlands established themselves as a sovereign nation independent of the Holy Roman Empire. This formally concluded the Dutch War of Independence, a more than fifteen year struggle for independence.
The Netherlands is the home of the Dutch Reformist movement, a reformation movement against the Catholic Church that gained popularity in the early fifteenth century. Religion would play a large factor in unifying the Netherlands and prompting the Dutch states to fight for independence. Today the Netherlands continues to be a major Reformist state, as well as a religiously tolerant one, attracting large populations of European Jews, Reformists, and other minority religions.
History[]
1900-1930[]
1900-1910 was a turbulent era for the Netherlands. A civil war with communists devastated the economy. The Dutch lost all colonies. Then, the Dutch won a brief moment of glory when they helped win the war with France.
