New Amsterdam (Dutch: Nieuw Amsterdam) is the capital and most populous city in New Orange. It is located within its own federal district, situated between the states of Beverwick, New Jersey and Lange Eylant.
History[]
Dutch Settlement[]
In May 1624, the first settlers of New Netherland arrived on Nut Island as Cornelius May disembarked on the island to start New Netherland. To defend against possible French attacks, Fort Amsterdam was first constructed and established in present-day downtown New Amsterdam in 1625. The entirety of Manhattan Island was actually purchased from a Lenape tribe in exchange for 60 guilders worth of trade goods. New Amsterdam became a city on February 2, 1653, and was the capital of the New Netherland colony.
Vermont War (1750-1753)[]
During the Vermont War, New Amsterdam became a great supplier of weapons and men for the war. In June of 1752, there was a futile French invasion of New Amsterdam and Pavonia; this disastrous attack devastated the French navy, and was ultimately one of the causes of France's loss in the war.
New Orangite Revolution (1768-1774)[]
When New Netherland declared its independence as New Orange, New Amsterdam was chosen as the capital for the new nation. Fort Amsterdam, which was still held by the Dutch, was overrun by the revolutionaries in 1768. It, just like in the Vermont War, became a center of recruitment and supplies.
