Alternative History

New Mexico was a state located in the western and southwest regions of the former United States. It was the fifth-largest U.S. state in terms of land size, and had a population of 1,303,302 according to the 1980 U.S. Census. It was admitted to the Union as the 47th state on January 6, 1912.

Doomsday targets

Areas destroyed by Soviet missiles were:

  • Albuquerque, New Mexico's largest city on Doomsday
  • Kirtland Air Force Base, located in southeast Albuquerque
  • Santa Fe, the state capital
  • Walker Air Force Base outside Roswell
  • Cannon Air Force Base outside Clovis
  • The White Sands Test Facility and White Sands Missile Range outside Las Cruces (ironically, the first atomic bomb test, in July 1945, was performed on the White Sands Missile Range)
  • Hollomon Air Force Base, outside Alamogordo

Portions of two large survivor states overlap the territory of former New Mexico, Navajo Nation (also known as Dinetah) and the Republic of West Texas. The two countries co-govern all of New Mexico not directly within each others' borders as unincorporated territory.

Dinetah's borders emcompass the northwestern corner of the state. The largest towns in the region, Farmington and Gallup, were not targeted but nevertheless fell completely apart in the weeks after Doomsday. An estimated 2,500 refugees from the region found their way into the Navajo Nation, bringing with them reports of 'total chaos' in both towns, and the heroism of citizens who led the refugees to safety or died protecting them.

The southeastern corner of the state is part of West Texas. The largest towns in this region, Hobbs and Carlsbad, took the lead in directing relief efforts in the first days and weeks after Doomsday, and eventually led the surviving town and county governments to join up with the Midland-based West Texas government. It is expected that the region will formally become part of the Republic of Texas when it is established in 2012.

For decades it was thought that no one, except for random outlaws and survivalists, lived in the vast expanse of the state outside of the Dinetah and West Texas borders. In the past few years, though, it was discovered that the town of Silver City, located in the southwest corner of the state, not only still existed but apparently was a haven for criminals, malcontents, survivalists and Mexican/Laredan drug lords, all coexisting under a sort of honor code.

While most residents in southwest New Mexico had fled to Mexico the week of Doomsday, some residents stayed put. The history of the region between Doomsday and 2007 is not yet known, except that by 2007 it had been redeveloped by the drug lords as a safe haven for their product, far away from Mexican and West Texan authorities' purview. The drug lords, working in concert with other criminals and survivalists, had attempted to shelter evidence of human habitation. The cover was blown after a Mexican Air Force flyover in '07. Intelligence reports give the city's estimated population at between 1,700 and 2,500, and there is now a question of when the West Texan and Mexican militiaries will move into the region to attempt to shut down the illegal activity going on there.
