New York City (officially called the City of New York) is the largest city in the United States and the State of New York, both in terms of population and land area according to the 1997 preliminary census. The city goes by many nicknames: NYC, The Big Apple, Gotham City, the Capital of the World, and the City That Never Sleeps. Sometimes, it is simply called New York, but the word "city" has been added so as to distinguish it with the state.

A global power city, New York City exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.

The city boasts one of the world's natural harbor of which the iconic Statue of Liberty is found standing on Liberty Island. In addition, some of America's iconic landmarks are located in New York City, such as Times Square, The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park. Notably, the city is known to be a melting pot of different races and ethnicities coming from all over the world; making it one of the most diverse cities in the world.
