On May 10, 1963 an North American Airliner piloted by Captain Jon Jackson, was intercepted by Iranian MiGs as it flew across Saudi Arabia toward Jerusalem International Airport. The pilots initially followed the aircraft as it flew across Iranian Air Space into the Middle East, but continued past Iran and flew into Israeli Air Space. The two fighter jets were intercepted by Israeli F-4 Phantoms and both fighters engaged each other. In the mist of all the chaos, a stray missile from an Iranian fighter slammed into the wing of the airliner. The jet descended at an rapid rate, and at 12:42 pm (local time) the plane plowed into the desert outside of Jerusalem. Both Israeli jets destroyed the Iranian jets, but the event led to tensions between the democrats and communist.
