The Republic of North Ohio is an American survivor state located in Northern Ohio.
History[]
Main article: History of North Ohio
Military[]

An Ohioan Uniform
The Ohio Army (known in jest as the Burgee Boys) is one of the largest in the region, its numbers swelled by required military service. The military is mainly defensive, protecting the borders from raiders, and helping to regulate immigration.
The size of the Ohioan Armed forces is largely dictated by a clause in the NO Constitution known as the "War Clause", as follows: "All able men as residents of this state between ages seventeen and thirty shall be enrolled in the militia, and preform his duty as prescribed by the laws laid by legislature or executive,"
Equipment[]
The Ohioans are a professional modern army by many standards, second only to the army of Maine. They have one of the most expansive armoured divisions, in addition to advanced firearms and excellent fortifications.
Special Divisions[]
The Ohio Army has a few specialized units in its ranks.

"The Coyotes"[]
The 5th Infantry Division is considered an elite unit of the Army, affectionately nicknamed The Coyotes. They are among the most standardized in the army, often given superior training and equipment. Known for ferocity and effectiveness in combat, the unit has more than once received casualties upwards of 60%. They are sent whenever there are entrenched raiders or brigands, and occasionally guard caravans. This unit has clashed with the Lima Republic both in the war of conquest and the Civil War, and even the early Wooster-Manchester Republic forces.
Armoured Division[]
The North Ohioan military, upon conquering the Lima Republic, gained access to tank technology, specifically the M103 Heavy Tank, and a refinery to process their large quantities of Oil. In 1993, North Ohioan scientists developed the N-01 Light Assault Tank, a fast, lightly armoured tank designed to overwhelm the enemy by sheer numbers, making up for the Heavy Tank's lack of speed. The tanks are managed by a full time dedicated squad of engineers. Their tank division is largely dismantled after the Civil War.
Demographics[]
North Ohio is majority white, with some ethnic minorities making up approximately 1.5% of the general population.
Languages[]
The Official Language of North Ohio is English, however, large Amish Populations speak a German dialect know as Diestch, and before Cleveland seceded following the civil war, there was a settlement called Domoy which was near entirely Slovenian speaking. A small minority of Niagaran migrants speak their flavour of French. Also notable is the small but significant population of Aksotawg speakers, economic migrants from Michigan seeking to take advantage of the lax immigration laws of North Ohio.
The local population speak an English dialect commonly called (by non speakers) the "Buckeye Accent". To those whom speak it, it is known as Rostichaek "Rusty Talk" (here spelled as phonetically as possible). While it is mostly limited to the lower classes, it is quite endemic, and outsiders are quickly identified by their lack of fluency. Those whom have studied it note its similarities to Aksotawg, though native speakers deny this; despite many claims that it is a language in its own right.
Religion[]
While various faiths are followed in North Ohio, most of them are Christian Denominations. The most popular by far is InsCath, or Insular Catholicism, headed from the Holy "City" of Great Penance, a beautiful walled district of Sandusky, privately operated by the Church, and patrolled by private guards.
Jovism, a semi-religious philosophy with apocryphal origins, is followed by many city-dwellers, though has the largest following in Sandusky and Clintony.
The Faithful were a prominent new Christian Sect formed in the slums of Clintony, but the Faithful have long since migrated out of North Ohio, leaving only the most desolate followers behind, numbering in the mere tens and often mocked for being abandoned.
Also practiced are the traditional Lutheranism and Methodism, and well as Episcopal Christendom.
Flags[]
The Old-World burgee is the official national flag of Ohio. however, after the Saginaw Bay Incident in 1995, the international Law of Separation was created (By the GLRU). This law stated that each nation who signed required a visually distinct flag for Civilian ships, so as not to be confused with military envoys. This flag had to have a ratio of three to five in addition. In response, the Ohio Civilian flag was created.
Economy[]
The economy of North Ohio relies heavily on farming and fishing, incentivized by the government with lower taxes. Huge tracts of land have been devoted to large-scale farming; and the government has invested in the construction of several large fishing ships.
Shipping remains an important part of the Ohioan Economy, and fish holds status as the #1 export. Piracy from the Michigan Coast has long since been extinguished by GLRU patrols, though traders of Huron still have troublemakers on their heels.
Brewing[]
One of the most lucrative industries post-war, excluding fishing, is the production of beer and mead (the latter often sold as "honey-wine"). The drinks are mainly produced by independent farmers, and sold locally. With the shortage of hops, beer and ale is often sweeter than before the war, or flavoured with such things as wormwood and Indian ginger.
Northern Manufacturing[]
Established in 1952, Northern Manufacturing was a small-time manufacturing company. Post-War, they are one of the primary contractors for stainless steel manufacture. They have expanded immensely in recent years in light of a lack of competition, and their most lucrative deal is producing stills for local brewing companies.
Standard Products[]
Standard Products, a result of the breakup of Standard Oil; Standard Products was a large employer in the Port Clinton Area, until the abandonment of the city, a problem from which SP has not yet recovered.
Conditions[]
Conditions in North Ohio are desirable in comparison to land outside its border. Hunger is at an all-time low, and unemployment has dropped from a staggering 25% to 10% from 1971 to 1990.
The average family size 4-8 children; and the population has been growing steadily.

Traveling on foot and on horseback are the only options for the average citizen, although military vehicles (powered by wood gas) are a common sight near the military Buffer Zone. Many people have built "Stagecoaches" from old cars, and 1700's-style wagons for the transportation of goods.
While corn is the primary crop, hemp is also very important, as both a source of food, and cloth and even building material in some places. Hemp cloth is the most common, with drugget (a light wool weave) a close second. Cotton is considered a luxury item.
Bars, Tap-houses, and Pubs are all very common, as a place to relax after work, dance and forget your post-nuclear problems. Owners buy up as much alcohol as they can, and sell it at varying prices. Jukeboxes from before the war spew classic tunes, and live bands preform Ohio's unique version of Jazz and Bluegrass music.
Salvage from the northern boomtowns is a very important resource, as steel is unavailable in the region.
Salt mines in the former Cleveland area are an important resource, as stated above, though after the Civil War, these fell to Cleveish rebels, namely Domoyans, Beechvalens, and Cuyahogans.
Foreign Relations[]
North Ohio is a member of the Great Lakes Region Union, an international body which regulates trade law in addition to other pertinent functions. While originally, it was a pivotal member state, after the Civil War its fellow members have become distrusting of the Republic, and relations have soured. With its newfound secessionist neighbours, Lima and Cleveland, relations are incredibly poor, much to the detriment of North Ohio's military capabilities and its access to important resources. In addition, since the Fur War, North Ohio has grown suspicious of Maine, suspecting interference of some variety, those these claims are largely viewed with skepticism and are often baseless paranoia.
