Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a Scandinavian country in northern Europe. It borders Sweden to the east and north and Finland and Russia to the north-east. Its extensive coastline touches the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea. The remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard also form part of Norway, the subarctic Bouvet Island is a Norwegian dependency, and the Antarctic territories of Peter I Island and Queen Maud Land are also claimed by the country.
Its surface area of 385,207 square kilometers makes Norway the ninth-largest country in Europe and the 75th-largest in the world. With a population of over 5.3 million inhabitants, it is the 20th-most populous country in Europe and the 105th in the world.
The kingdom was established in 872 as a merger of many petty kingdoms and has existed continuously for over eleven centuries. From 1537 to 1814, Norway was a part of the Kingdom of Denmark–Norway, and from 1814 to 1905, it was in a personal union with the Kingdom of Sweden. Norway joined the Central Powers during the Great War, and had a revolution that established a republic, which was then overthrown in a coup d'état by the Communist Party in 1948 who established a socialist republic.
In 1974, another revolution replaced the socialist republic with another republic. After a referendum determined that people wanted the monarchy to return, Prince Henry was crowned 'Henry I' on 25 December 1983.
Norway maintains the Nordic welfare model with universal health care and a comprehensive social security system, and its values are rooted in egalitarian ideals. Norway is a founding member of the League of Nations and the Germanic League.
