Editors welcome
This 1983: Doomsday article is considered canon, but experts on particular regions are still welcome to make changes or additions as appropriate.

This map shows all countries with nuclear power generating plants in 1983.

On September 26, 1983, the world had 255[1] nuclear power plants in various stages of construction, operation, and decommissioning.

These plants, including their fuel and waste, contributed to the damage of the Doomsday event when they were damaged or when the crew could not shut them down safely. In fact, the radioactive contamination left by these leaks and meltdowns was much more persistent than the effects of the missiles themselves. In some places, the damage has been compounded when states or armed groups reused the radioactive material to make dirty bombs.

Those few nuclear plants that remained operable became major political controversies. In the years since 1983, a small number of plants that had been incomplete or decommissioned have been brought online; but no new nuclear plant has yet been built owing to the expense, the scarcity of materials, and local opposition. Nevertheless, a few countries have announced their intention to research nuclear power or build new plants. Currently there are 11[2] active nuclear power plants around the world, all of them built before 1983.

Some facilities of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) survived in Geneva and Monaco. The agency has been revived, but as an office of the League of Nations rather than a true intergovernmental organization. In the post-nuclear world, its role is more important than ever.

Most of the IAEA's work is done by its ten regional response teams, most of which are further broken down into sub-regions. The first phase of its mission was to track down the fate and status of the world's reactors and waste sites, a first step toward efforts to mitigate the damage caused by meltdowns and leaks. Nowadays it works to help shut down and decommission abandoned plants in unclaimed territory that might still be hazardous, plants in small nations lacking resources to safely decommission a plant, and secure radioactive materials. The states that fund this work assist with commissioning fossil fuel or renewable energy sources as well as assist with procuring radioactive material for healthcare systems.

This page is intended to be a complete census of the world's nuclear plants in 1983 and afterward. The source is this List of commercial nuclear reactors.

Notes

  1. For this page, I'm not counting the individual reactors in each plant. I'm also counting two plants as one when they're located on the same or directly adjacent premises, an arrangement that was especially common in West Germany.
  2. Countries still operating nuclear plants are Argentina (2), Brazil, the Outer Lands, Sicily, Finland, Sweden (2), Socialist Siberia, Tamil Nadu, and India.
  3. Note that some of these plants share names with known missile targets but are not listed as "meltdown/destroyed". This is because they take their names from the oblasts where they are located and may be quite distant from the respective cities.
