The Olympic Games - often referred to as the Olympian Games, the Olympiad, or the Olympics, is an international event comprising a series of athletic sporting competitions that are participated by athletes across the globe. It has been heralded as a highly prestigious sporting event, dominating the headlines whenever they are occurring. The modern Olympics are based on the Greek Olympics of antiquity, which were held from the 8th century to their abolition by the Romans in 393 AD.

Establishment and the 1884 Olympics[]

The concept of the modern Olympiad was born during the age of the World Fair in the late 19th century. The Byzantine bureaucrat, Grigoris Angelilis, spearheaded the campaign for a world fair. The Byzantines had been attempting to be recognized as the true descendants of Rome, and while many had come to that conclusion over the years, many still dismissed them as a Greek rump state that came out of the collapse of the old Roman Empire. The Olympics was a way of saying that even if Byzantium was not Roman but purely Greek, that would still imply a rich and glorious past that the mighty empire possessed. Finally, in 1882, the Committee of the World Fair finally issued a proclamation, declaring that an international sporting competition would take place in 1884. The state that bid the most for the position would be declared the host. The Byzantines, desperate to fulfill their goals, won the position. The 1884 Olympics took place in Constantinople. In the years prior, the Byzantines spent mountainous amounts of wealth constructing elegant structures, lavish hotels and inns, and extravagant centers of entertainment to show off the empire's glory. The costly endeavors received mixed opinions from the global press with some heralding it as an example of the glory of Rome and others referring to the 1884 Constantinople Olympics as "a gilded occasion." Regardless, the 1884 Olympian Games were a massive success and since then the Olympiad has been held every two years (one year in the summer and another in the winter).
