Ontario is the easternmost province of Canada, and the largest one by population: it is bordered by Quebec and Nunavut to the east, Hudson Bay to the north, Manitoba to the west, the Great Lakes to the south, and the New Netherlands to the southeast. The province was among the first to be settled and annexed by Great Britain, and rapidly rose in importance to become the economic, cultural and administrative heart of the nascent country of Canada.
The region is mostly flat, covered in dense woodlands (especially in its northern part) and crossed by several important rivers: the largest population centres are all in the southern area of the province, including Canada's capital, Ottawa, and Ontario's capital and largest city in Canada, Toronto. Southern Ontario is the most industrialized part of Canada, while the province's northern half is sparsely populated, and its economy depends mainly on forestry and mining.
