The Ottoman Empire originally was just a splinter of the greater Rum-Seljuk Empire, but later became a great power covering parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Since 1683, its power started to wane, even being called "The sick man of Europe". After World War I, it fell apart and was replaced by the republic of Turkey.
