Panama (Spanish: Panamá) is a republic of New Granada: it is the smallest one by both land area and population, and it is located in the north of the country. It borders the Caribbean Sea to the north, Centroamerica to the west, the Pacific Ocean to the south and Colombia to the southeast. It was colonized by Spain and included in the viceroyalty of New Granada: when it gained independence, it was made into an independent republic.

Panama consists of a narrow isthmus of flatland connecting the South American continent to the North American one: during the 19th century, a channel was made cutting through the isthmus and connecting the Caribbean Sea (and thus the Atlantic Ocean) to the Pacific Ocean. Because of its strategic importance, it represents a vital asset through which numerous ships pass: as for the Suez Canal, the channel has been placed under international control and is administered by an intergovernmental agency.
