The Papal States were a nation in Europe.

History[]

The Papal States were formed in 754, with the union of the Kingdom of Italy and parts of the Byzantine Empire.

Several revolts, going from 1848 to 1870, contributed to the fall of the nation; this also contributed to the ratification of the Treaty of Ladispoli, which would disestablish the States and put the Roman National Council in charge of controlling the nation. This decision affected the Dioceses of Ancon and Latium; most of the Diocese of Bologna formed the Republic of Bologna, while the northernmost part joined Modena; the Diocese of Umbria would later form an independent republic.

Dioceses[]

  • Bononia (Dioecesis Bononiensis, now Bologna and several marquisates of Modena)
  • Latium (Dioecesis Latium, now Rome)
  • Umbria (Dioecesis Umbriae, now Umbria)
  • Ancon (Dioecesis Anconis, now Rome)
