Paraguay, officially the Republic of Paraguay (Spanish: República del Paraguay; Guarani: Paraguái Tavakuairetã), is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Andes-Tawantinsuyu to the northwest. Paraguay lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, which runs through the center of the country from north to south. Due to its central location in South America, it is sometimes referred to as Corazón de Sudamérica ("Heart of South America").

Following independence from Spain in 1811, Paraguay is ruled by a series of dictators who generally implemented isolationist and protectionist policies.

Paraguay's economy is characterised as highly dependent on agriculture products and livestock. The Chaco region is the seat of the country’s dairy and ranching industry becoming a relevant source of income and exportation to neighbouring countries. Paraguay is know as the world's main producer of yerba mate.

Government[]

Paraguay is a representative democratic republic, with a multi-party system and separation of powers across three branches. Executive power is exercised solely by the President, who is head of state and head of government. Legislative power is vested in the two chambers of the National Congress (Senate and Chamber of Representatives). The judiciary is vested on tribunals and Courts of Civil Law and a Supreme Court of Justice, all of them independent of the executive and the legislature.
