Peru, officially the Republic of Peru, is a nation in South America. Peru is bordered by Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, and Bolivia to the south. Its surface area of 1.2 million square kilometers makes it the third-largest country in South America and the 24th-largest in the world. With a population of over 32.8 million inhabitants, it is the fourth-most populous country in South America and the 54th in the world.
Peru was not directly involved in the Great War, but they sent weapons to Brazil, which was involved in the war. Peru later adopted a policy of neutrality similarly to Switzerland. Peru sided with the Western World in the Cold War, which resulted in a long communist insurrection in the north of the country, supported by the Soviet Union. During the conflict, Peru created the Sapdom of Cusco, a subnational monarchy headed by the conservatives and monarchists. Today, Peru has the second-largest economy of South America, and has a rich, encompassing history.
