In January 1936, the Spanish 'Popular Front (Spanish: Frent Popular)' rose to power under a controversial election. In response, right-wing elements of the Spanish Republican Armed forces conspired with Spanish Monarchist and Falangists to overthrow the Spanish Republican Government. However, the Spanish Royal Family played a more significant role in the Spanish Nationalist revolution in this timeline than in the OTL. As such, instead of enlisting the help of Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy, the Spanish Nationalists chose the Hellenic Royal Family and their monarchist supporters as primary allies.
As a result:
- Instead of having Germany or Italy as primary allies of the Spanish Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War, they have Greece.
Deviations from OTL[]
- The Spanish Royal Family played a major role in the Spanish Nationalist revolution. As such, the King of Spain was designated the head of state in the Spanish Nationalist revolution from the beginning rather than after Franco's death. Likewise, 'Caudillo' was relegated into an informal title for the National Governor of Spain, equivalent to 'Chief (Greek: Αρχηγός)' for the National Governor of Greece.
- The Spanish Nationalists were primarily supported by Greece instead of Germany or Italy.
- Great Britain and France, without the need to appease Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy over the Spanish Civil War, made limited military interventions on behalf of the Spanish Republicans. On the part of Great Britain, the Spanish Republicans were able to convince them to come to their aid by playing on their fears of losing their Cypriot colony to the Greeks as well as offering a seven decade lease of the Campo de Gibraltar to Britain. The intervention sparked infighting between pro-Soviet Republicans and their pro-democracy counterparts, hampering the Spanish Republic's war effort.
- France and Great Britain seized control of all Spanish colonies in Africa, including the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands, alongside the Savage Island, will serve as the remaining territories ever controlled by the Spanish Republic to this day since the end of the Spanish Civil War.
- José Antonio Primo de Rivera was never executed as he and numerous of his imprisoned compatriots were rescued by Hellenic special forces shortly after the outbreak of war.
- The Soviet Union never received gold from the Spanish Republic thanks to interceptions by Spanish Nationalist special forces and thus are pushed to the brink of financial collapse. The Soviet Union would henceforth rely on funding from the Allies and later covertly from NATO for their survival.
- The Communist International collapsed earlier than in the OTL.
- The Spanish Civil War ended in a peace treaty in which the Kingdom of Spain would renounce all claims to the Canary Islands and all of her colonies in Africa in exchange of the Kingdom taking control of the Spanish mainland, the Alboran Island and the Balearic Islands. Post-Civil War bloodshed were averted thanks to population exchange programmes stipulated by the treaty between the Spanish Republic and the Kingdom of Spain which allowed both Nationalist and Republican sympathisers to move into friendly territories without hassle.
- Spain entered the Second World War at the side of the Allies to help their primary Spanish Civil War supporter Greece. Thanks to Spanish intervention, Greece never fell to the Axis Powers.
- Hellenic National Governor Ioannis Metaxas lived as long as his Spanish counterpart Francisco Franco thanks to joint medical attention from both the Spanish and Hellenic medical systems which were overhauled during the Spanish Civil War.
- Greece retook Cyprus in a long and bloody guerrilla campaign against both the British and Turkish colonial powers and their Cypriot Federal Government proxies.
- The Soviet Union collapsed in 1980 under the machination of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The former member nations of the Warsaw Pact were reorganised into corporatocratic fiefdoms under the veneer of democracy.
- With the Cold War in the Phalanx Pact Timeline been a three way conflict between NATO, the Warsaw Pact and the Phalanx Pact, NATO’s technology base had advanced to the point of being 30 years ahead of their Original Timeline counterparts in 1980. With a pro-engineering and pro-medical science policy in response to wartime conditions during the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, the Phalanx Pact countries have advanced technologically 20 years ahead of their NATO counterparts in the Phalanx Pact Timeline. As such, the Phalanx Pact would technologically be 50 years ahead of NATO in the original timeline. The Soviet Union’s technology base was stagnant under NATO hindrance to the point of its progress remaining at the same pace as their counterparts in the Original Timeline.
- The Kingdom of Greece and the Kingdom of Spain will survive to this day under the ideologies of Metaxism and Francoism, respectively.
