The Philippines, officially the Philippine Republic (Filipino: Republikang Pilipino; Spanish: República Filipina), is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. Situated in the western Pacific Ocean, it consists of about 7,641 islands that are broadly categorized under three main geographical divisions from north to south: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The capital city of the Philippines is Malolos and the most populous city is Manila. Bounded by the South China Sea on the west, the Philippine Sea on the east and the Celebes Sea on the southwest, the Philippines shares maritime borders with Japan to the northeast, Micronesia to the east, Malaysia south and southwest, Vietnam to the west, and China to the northwest. Its surface area of square kilometres makes Asia's 20th- and the world's 79th-largest country. With a population of over 107.8 million inhabitants, it is the seventh-most populous country in Asia and the 15th in the world.

The arrival of Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer leading a fleet for the Spanish, in Homonhon, Eastern Samar in 1521 marked the beginning of Hispanic colonization. In 1543, Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos named the archipelago Las Islas Filipinas in honour of Philip II of Spain. With the arrival of Miguel López de Legazpi from Mexico City, in 1565, the first Hispanic settlement in the archipelago was established. The Philippines became part of the Spanish Empire for close to 400 years. This resulted in Catholicism becoming the dominant religion. During this time, Manila became the western hub of the trans-Pacific trade connecting Asia with Acapulco in the Americas using Manila galleons.

The Philippines gained independence in 1898 after a successful revolution against Spain. In the time of the revolution, they were ceded to Germany. This escalated the Philippine–German War, and on 1902. Germany annexed the Philippines, after the Great War which ceded the Philippines to Japan. As the Anglo–American War happened, many Filipino independence movements revolted against Japanese control supporting the United States against Japanese control.
