Pierce Wallop Hawthorne (November 27, 1944- July 1, 2015) was an American rancher and politician who served as a United States Senator from Wyoming from 1977 to 1989. A member of the Republican Party, he is known for his voter-buying and business alignment, causing him to almost be censured by the Wyoming Republican Party.
Hawthorne was born on November 27, 1944 in Cheyenne, Wyoming to to a rich and powerful family and was groomed to be a politician from early age. He graduated with a law degree from Harvard. He served 3 years in the Vietnam War and won the Purple Heart. He became a Vice President of Hawthorne Wipes until 1976 when he was unexpectedly nominated as a Republican for Senate despite not running and it became a National scandal when he was elected and it’s widely believed that his father bought the election. He used his term to improve business tax breaks. He won another upset victory in 1982 but lost his bid for a third term in 1988.
He was married 7 times but had one biological child, Jeffrey Hawthorne (1970).
