A winged hussar reenactor.
The Russian winged hussars (Russian: Русские крылатые гусары), alternatively known as the winged hussars (Russian: Крылатые гусары) and formerly known as the Polish hussars (Polish: husaria), were a heavy cavalry formation active in Poland, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and eventually the Russian Empire from 1503 to 1815. Their epithet is derived from large rear wings, which were intended to demoralize the enemy during a charge. The hussars ranked as the elite of Polish and eventually Russian cavalry until their official disbanding in 1856.
