Alternative History

The Confederation of the Rhine was established following the treaty of Antwerp in 1948 which saw the American and British occupation zones in Germany unify. The country is a Federal Presidential Republic consisting of 6 administrative regions, these include 3 states: Northern Rhine, Saarland, Rhine-Palatinate and 2 Grand Cities: Düsseldorf and Mainz along with the capital city of Cologne.

The three states elected a governor every 4 years, the Saarland having been established in 1947 elect a governor every other odd numbered year whilst the North Rhine and the Rhineland-Palatinate elect a governor every other even numbered year. Dusseldorf and Mainz are recognized as Grand cities and are outside their state's administrative region, they hold elections based on support of the ruling coalition of the city.

The Rhinestag is the legislative body of the country, it has 43 seats and thus 22 are needed to form a coalition led by a President of the Rhinestag. The longest serving member of the Rhinestag serves also as the speaker of the Rhinestag and his votes counts as 2 in the event of a tie of any motion, the current speaker is Peter Muller (RCP). The Rhine convenes at Reichburg Castle in Cochem.

There are 3 major parties within the Rhineland, 2 other parties have only minor support and have not been involved in a ruling coalition in the Rhinestag. The RCP has the most seat but are in a coalition with the RNP, the opposition consists of the three other parties.

  • The Christian Rhenish Party (RCP) is the center right party of the Rhineland, founded in 1949 by Johannes Hoffmann it dominated politics during the 1950s and the 1960s. It took a more centrist position during the 1970s following the rise of another right-wing party.
  • The Rhenish Labor Party (RLP) is the liberal party of Rhineland, they had a hard time following their founding in 1955 as the threat of communism led to difficulty in gaining support.
  • The Rhenish National Party (RNP) is the conservative party of Rhineland, they took a more right-wing position than the RCP after their establishment in 1961.
  • Green Rhineland (UdR) are a left-wing party in Rhineland that focus on pushing environmental conservation policies in the Rhinestag. Founded in 2001, they are the youngest party with a seat in the Rhinestag.
  • The Greater Rhine Unionist (GrU) are a far-right party which push for the attaining of more lands along the Rhine. They hold "Ultra-Christian" values which they believe the RCP and RNP have given up on.
