Portland, officially the Worker's Commune of Portland, is a city-state in North America. Formerly under a state of Anarchy, Multiple former union leaders, workers, and laborers organized the city-state in the October of 1975 after fear of being annexed by the U.S. West Coast branch of the International Committee of Restoration, a confederation and reported "megacorporation" by it's opponents. The ICR had engaged in a military junta, and multiple people feared their integration. The Worker's Commune is stated to have a high HDI and Democracy Index, despite the experimental nature of its far-left government. It has also been criticized for a harsh foreign policy and an increase in crime. Multiple communists and socialists cite it as a successful leftist state, while those on the other side of the political spectrum see it as harsh and unstable.
It is run by a Directory, mainly managed by the Portland Federation of Unions, the main worker's union in Portland. It has three political parties, Worker's Front, Integration, and Christian Union.
History[]
The nuclear weapons dropped on January 21st, 1968 totally devastated Portland. In the years following its destruction, people didn't step foot in Portland until October 1975, when a group of 200 men and women arrived there during the migrations away from abandoned cities and the ICR, which had entered a military junta. Most of these men and women were disillusioned with the former United States and its system after the war. Portland became the site of a small community of industrial workers, before eventually developing a syndicalist ideology after becoming opponents to the corporatist system in the ICR.
Culture[]
Portland has a varied culture with various ethnic groups and immigrants. Overtime, Portland developed it's own specific national culture being a close blend of African American, Syndicalist, and Western cultures. A common and popular sport played is Basketball.
Government[]
The Worker's Commune's government is organized by a Syndicalist directorial republic. The main and leading union, the Portland Federation of Unions (commonly referred to as simply "The Union") acts as a de-facto legislature, with the Executive Committee of the PFU electing members of the Directory. All members of the Executive Committee are elected by the citizens. The Directory acts as an executive branch of government, passing or vetoing resolutions passed by the Executive Committee.
