Portugal, officially the Kingdom of Portugal (Portuguese: Reino de Portugal; Latin: Regnum Portugalliae), is a country on the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, bordered by Spain on the east and north and bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and south. The Atlantic archipelagos of Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe are also part of its territory.

Its surface area of 92,212 square kilometers makes Portugal the 16th-largest country in Europe and the 104th-largest in the world. With a population of over 10.2 million inhabitants, it is the 13th-most populous country in Europe and the 86th in the world.

Formed in the Middle Ages, Portugal is one of the oldest countries in the world. From the 15th century onward, it discovered many lands across the world and established a global colonial empire, becoming one of the world's major economic, military and political powers. Since the 19th century, its colonies began declaring independence as sovereign states, the first of which being Brazil in 1822.

Alongside Brazil, Portugal was one of the two foreign countries that participated on the Iberian War, a conflict between the monarchist government and republican rebels of Spain fought between 1936 and 1940. The war ended with a costly victory for Portugal and the monarchist government of Spain.

Portugal has left a profound cultural, architectural and linguistic influence across the globe, with a legacy of around 250 million Portuguese speakers, and many Portuguese-based creoles. It is a developed country with an advanced economy and high living standards. Additionally, it is highly placed in rankings of moral freedom, peacefulness, LGBT+ rights, democracy, press freedom, stability, social progress, prosperity, and HDI. Portugal is a founding member of the League of Nations and the Latin League, and is a member of PANTO.

Portugal hosted, alongside Spain, the 2005 FIFA World Cup.
