The Kingdom of Portugal (Portuguese:Reino de Portugal) is a country located on the west side of the Iberian Peninsula, in Southern Europe. The Kingdom of Portugal is adjacent to the Kingdom of Spain, and is close to the Kingdom of France. Portugal is known for setting off the era of European Exploration for being the first of modern Europe to send out sea expeditions into the outside world, making history with circumventing the coast of Africa in 1497. Portugal proceeded to explore the east and western hemisphere and created a colonial empire. spanning from Brazil to today's Dutch Indonesia. From Portugal's early successes in founding the world trade network, threats from other European empires diminished the Portuguese colonial empire. At home Portugal was annexed by Spain temporarily in the 16th-17th century and abroad Portuguese trade was threatened by Dutch competition.

The 18th and 19th centuries were a time of Portuguese Renaissance. In the 1750s Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, minister for Jospeh I of Portugal initiated British inspired reforms preparing the empire for industrialization. Later using raw materials from Brazil and Africa Portugal industrialized successfully before its contemporaries Spain and France. Portugal contributed much in the way of the studies of the natural sciences, creating the theory of evolution and climatology. The 20th century brought the strains of keeping such a diverse and advanced global empire together in a society of mass production and consumption. Regional uprisings led to the reformed Portugese Commonwealth. In stark contrast to other global blocks, the commonwealth has two capitals-Lisbon in the Kingdom of Portugual and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Portugal retains its status as a Catholic World Power with a system "democratic monarchy". The Commonwealth is a member of the Great Eight on the Global Security Conference. Chief exports include manufactured coffee, furniture and medicine.
